Kavanaugh: Education Equalization Tax Same as ‘Raping Business Owners’

In an appearance on KAET-TV Channel 8’s Horizon, State Rep. John Kavanaugh of Fountain Hills equated the preservation of a tax that channels $250 million directly to Arizona’s schools with violent sexual assault.

In explaining his support of deep cuts to Arizona’s schools and permanently repealing the tax -- a position that puts Wall Street insurance firms before Arizona’s children -- Kavanaugh said,

“The bottom line is California is raising every tax they can find.  Businesses are fleeing California.  We want them to, when they drive through Arizona, say, ‘Hey, they’re not raping the business owners in, uh, Arizona.’

Kavanuagh’s position is a direct assault on Arizona’s schools.  One of the largest beneficiaries of repealing the measure would be New York-based Metropolitian Life Insurance Co.  According to The Arizona Republic, “Calculations, based on Maricopa County property assessment records, show the biggest savings in 2006 went to the Phoenician resort and to New York-based Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in 2007 and 2008.  If the tax is repealed, MetLife also would receive the biggest savings, nearly $150,000, for the upcoming tax year.”  [Source: The Arizona Republic, April 4, 2009]
