As the state legislature considers “cutting $300 million to $900 million in state funding to K-12 education from the 2009-10 budget,” Arizona parents are working to raise money to “to help schools survive budget cuts.”
Cave Creek Unified School District parents started an effort in March to raise money to help the district handle next year's budget cuts. The Step UP! campaign has netted $17,275 in donations from 58 people…
In Scottsdale, a school parent-teacher organization decided to use an online auction this year to raise money.
Anasazi Elementary School's PTO normally holds an auction within the community, but decided to open up the auction to the online world due to the souring economy…
The monthlong auction, held in March and April, included vacation packages to the Fairmont Scottsdale and Walt Disney World, memberships to Ancala and Firerock country clubs, and Phoenix Suns and Arizona Diamondbacks tickets and autographed memorabilia.
We should applaud parents for pitching in, but these kinds of efforts are unlikely to make up for the Legislature’s cuts. To meet the $900 million the Legislature is prepared to axe, Step UP! would have to repeat their success 52,098 times.
