Tuition Surcharges a Hidden Tax on Students, Families

The fallout from Gov. Jan Brewer and the Legislature’s budget cuts is tricking down.  Now, university students and families are paying a hidden tax on higher education.

Partially because of cuts to the state's universities, the Board of Regents earlier this month approved temporary tuition surcharges for students. At the University of Arizona, the surcharge will be $766 for in-state students, which comes on top of a previously approved tuition and fee hike of $545. That means the annual cost for a UA education will go up $1,311 next year — the biggest one-year jump in state history. [Arizona Daily Star, 5/10/09]
